Kim Han Nom

Kim Hán Nôm is a tool designed to support the translation of Hán-Nôm (classical Chinese and demotic Vietnamese) texts, developed by faculty members from the Faculty of Information Technology and the Center for Computational Linguistics at the University of Science – Vietnam National University, Ho Chi Minh City (VNU-HCM). By applying artificial intelligence, Kim Hán Nôm offers two main functions: the recognition and translation of Hán-Nôm texts. Specifically, the tool can identify and translate standard literary texts (such as books and stories), administrative documents (such as imperial edicts and royal decrees), and inscriptions in public spaces (such as temples, pagodas, and shrines).
Additionally, the tool supports converting Hán-Nôm texts into modern Vietnamese script (transliteration) and translating modern Vietnamese back into Chinese characters (semantic translation). Among these features, the transliteration function currently achieves an accuracy rate of over 80%, while other features are in continued development and refinement. The launch of this tool is both timely and essential, contributing not only to the field of Hán-Nôm studies but also enabling broader access to historical knowledge in literature, administration, medicine, and history by unlocking documents that remain preserved to this day.
At the beginning of 2025, Digitizing Vietnam contributed 5TB of Hán-Nôm data from Columbia University's library to help enhance the recognition and translation functions of Kim Hán Nôm.
