From Sculpture Garden To Cultural Landmark: A New Exhibition At The Chăm Museum

The Museum of Cham Sculpture stands as one of the most important cultural landmarks in central Vietnam and one of the world’s finest museums dedicated to Chăm art and civilization. Located in the heart of Da Nang, the museum preserves an extraordinary collection of sandstone sculptures, altars, and architectural masterpieces dating from the 7th to the 15th centuries. Through these remarkable works, visitors can explore the spiritual, artistic, and historical legacy of the ancient Champa Kingdom, whose influence once extended across much of central Vietnam.

Founded during the French colonial period, the museum itself is closely connected to the history of archaeological research and preservation in Vietnam. In recognition of this history, a special photographic exhibition entitled “From the Sculpture Garden of Thoàna to the Cham Art Museum” will be on display from 18 May to 18 August. The exhibition presents rare archival photographs from the École française d'Extrême-Orient (EFEO), highlighting the institution’s significant role in the establishment and early development of the museum.

Through historical photographs and documents, the exhibition retraces the transformation of the original sculpture garden at Thoàna into what later became the Museum of Cham Sculpture. It also offers visitors a glimpse into the early preservation efforts, archaeological expeditions, and scholarly collaborations that helped safeguard Chăm cultural heritage for future generations.

For those living in or traveling to Da Nang during this period, the museum and exhibition offer a unique opportunity to discover both the beauty of Chăm art and the fascinating history behind the museum itself. Visitors are warmly invited to explore this exceptional exhibition and experience one of Vietnam’s most treasured cultural institutions.
