On April 8, 2026, Weatherhead East Asia Institute will be hosting a rare conversation with French–Vietnamese filmmaker Trần Anh Hùng, joined by filmmaker and Columbia professor Tony Bui. The event offers a close look into Trần’s distinctive cinematic language—one shaped less by dialogue than by image, rhythm, and atmosphere.

Across works such as The Scent of Green PapayaCyclo, and The Taste of Things, Trần constructs films that move through texture and sensation: the weight of silence, the choreography of bodies, and the slow unfolding of memory through space and gesture. His cinema resists explanation, instead inviting viewers to feel their way through it.

This conversation traces that approach - how sound, stillness, and performance converge to produce meaning beyond words. It also opens a space to reflect on questions that run quietly through his films: how memory is carried, how culture is sensed rather than stated, and how cinema can hold both intimacy and history at once.

For audiences interested in Vietnamese cinema, global film language, or the craft of visual storytelling, this is a rare opportunity to hear directly from one of its most singular voices.
