Call for Papers: Rising Voices in Southeast Asian Studies (AAS 2027)

The Southeast Asia Council (SEAC) of the Association for Asian Studies is inviting proposals for the 2027 Rising Voices panel: “Shrinking Spaces for Free Inquiry in Southeast Asian Studies”.
The initiative supports emerging scholars in Southeast Asian Studies, including:
• Graduate students conducting original field or archival research
• Independent scholars
• Untenured faculty, adjuncts, and lecturers
• Early-career researchers from underfunded institutions in Southeast Asia
Selected participants will present at the Association for Asian Studies Annual Conference in Boston (March 18–21, 2027), with partial financial support from AAS/SEAC and TRaNS.
This year’s panel explores academic freedom, authoritarianism, self-censorship, neoliberal pressures in higher education, and the changing conditions for research and intellectual life across Southeast Asia.
