Lament of the Soldier’s Wife (Chinh Phụ Ngâm Khúc) is a landmark of 18th-century Vietnamese literature, originally composed in classical Chinese (Hán script) by Đặng Trần Côn (c. 1710–1745). Set against the backdrop of wartime separation, the work conveys the emotional anguish, longing, and resilience of a woman awaiting her husband’s return from the battlefield. Its profound expression of personal sorrow struck a chord with Confucian scholars of the Lê–Trịnh period and inspired numerous vernacular Nôm translations. Among these, the most celebrated version is traditionally attributed to either Đoàn Thị Điểm or Phan Huy Ích—an authorship that remains debated.
