Manuscript Borg.tonch.8, “Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum, et Latinum” (the Vietnamese–Portuguese–Latin dictionary), is a copy of the first dictionary of Vietnamese in chữ Quốc ngữ, compiled by the missionary Alexandre de Rhodes and copied out by Father Philiphê do Rosario Nguyễn Văn Bỉnh, CO. Each page is set in two columns, each listing headwords in Vietnamese in chữ Quốc ngữ followed by Portuguese and then Latin. It was completed in 1797 in Lisbon, Portugal, and runs to 592 pages in three parts. The first is the Vietnamese word list from A to X with Portuguese and Latin alongside. The second is a Portuguese index with page numbers for the reader to search by. The third gives the numerals in all three languages. This manuscript offers scholars of Vietnamese studies further material on the importance of the Vietnamese–Portuguese–Latin dictionary in connecting the Vietnamese of the day with the wider world.
