1. Course Description
This course offers an interdisciplinary introduction to Vietnam as a multi-ethnic nation. Through the lenses of anthropology, history, cultural studies, and linguistics, students explore the formation of Vietnam’s diverse ethnic communities and the socio-cultural dynamics that shape contemporary Vietnamese society.
The class is structured as a narrative with multiple thematic “chapters,” tracing Vietnamese life from traditional beliefs and social structures to modern cultural expressions such as cinema, youth culture, and digital language.
Materials in Vietnamese, Chinese, and English—including academic texts, journal articles, and documentary films—will be used.

A research paper (8–12 pages) on a topic related to ethnicity, culture, or society in Vietnam.

During Week 16, students deliver a 10–12 minute presentation based on their research paper.
